Ovarian Cancer National Alliance
Annual Conference – Celebration of Life
July 6, 2009 – July 9, 2009
Washington, D.C.

Since this was my first year attending the conference, I was amazed at how much was offered. Our days were filled with activities, speakers, education and fun. The main focus was on the participants attending the conference. We were educated on a wide variety of issues impacting ovarian cancer. We learned about current research, the politics of cancer, healthcare reform and much more. There were some very touching moments too.
The remembrance ceremony stands out in particular. It was held in the outside garden where the weather was incredibly beautiful for July. Consuela Costin filled the garden with music, touching hearts with her lovely songs.

Several participants were selected to read poems they had written. I was one of those selected. I read the poem posted on my website “Christine”. The writings truly struck a cord with most. Tears from the crowd flowed freely. I received so much attention after I read the poem, I was a bit overwhelmed! It seemed everywhere I went people recognized me and thanked me for the reading.
I was able to attend this conference because of the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California. Gayle McKenna, President of OCC asked me if I’d like to go and work at their table. She allowed me to sell my book there too. I didn’t expect to sell many books since the vendor section was only open for a couple hours each day. But… much to my surprise, I sold all 25 books I brought. One woman even stopped by to tell me she couldn’t stop reading it, even during the conference! Too funny…

I met so many wonderful people and I learned much more than I expected. I think the most valuable information was on how we can use our stories and our voices in ways that make a real difference in the fight against ovarian cancer. I look forward to attending the conference again next year. I hope to see you there!
